History of cotton terry cloth

As was mentioned earlier, the close relative of French terry is natural terry cloth. This fabric was invented in 1841 in France but originally was made out of silk. It took some time before European businessmen figured out how to make terry cloth out of natural cotton thread rather than silk thread, which is more durable and cheaper to acquire. Not until 1848, English entrepreneur Samuel Holt accomplished the goal of establishing a cotton terry cloth manufacturing process and patenting his invention in both England and the United Stated. His first cotton terry cloth manufacturing plant was set up in Paterson, New Jersey. Jackets made from cotton are very popular in our days.
The main difference between the original cotton terry cloth and the cotton French terry is the presence of the thread loops on either one or two sides of the fabric. Original cotton terry cloth is made of thread loops on both sides of the material, reminding the fabric of traditional “fuzzy” towels. Cotton for French terry jackets, on the other hand, has loops only on one side of the fabric and the other side of the fabric is completely smooth. Clothes such as natural cotton French terry jacket are usually sewn looped surface to the body and smooth surface outside, giving outfit a clean look. In addition, terry cloth is not usually stretchy and of a medium to thick weight. Cotton French terry and terry cloth are both natural, of course, and that is about all similarities there is. These jackets are love by the youth.
